Before You Keep a Fish You Have To Know A Few Things

You can’t just catch a fish and throw it on ice, keeping it for dinner tonight.  cooked fish fillet picture

You have to know the species, whether it is good to eat, if it is within the size limits and even if the fish is in season to be kept.  Any questions on these subjects are easily accessed by following this Florida Fish and Wildlife link.  Years ago a person coming to Florida and fishing in the Gulf didn’t even have to have a fishing license at all.  When you were fishing from shore or from your boat there were no permits required for any type of fishing.  Now however, there are so many anglers and so much fishing pressure that something had to be done to protect our sea creatures and fish.  It takes money to run it all and therefore we have Florida Fish and Wildlife.

We have also experienced a lot of Red Tide the past few years some of our Big Ten species of fish were really hurt.

You must always keep abreast of the rules and regulations for fish limits at all times during a given year as they do change once in a while.  There are some really heavy fines for keeping fish you shouldn’t or possession of wrong sized fish so make sure you are always well read about the regulations.

The main fish I target to eat around our Fort Myers area are the Redfish, Trout, and Snook, as well as Black Sea Bass, Flounder, and several species of Snapper.

picture of a snook, trout, and redfish I very rarely fish any fresh water fish because I really have grown to enjoy all the saltwater varieties.  Special knots and lines are needed to land many saltwater fish because they hit and strike like a ton of bricks.  Many species are ferocious predators and you better keep your hand on to your rod or have it in a good holder when they hit.
